Doing it Deliberately

So… there it is. The Tories have stopped tip toeing around it.

Yesterday, writing in the Telegraph, David Frost – Lord Frost of Allendale no less, set out unambiguously the Tory view that devolution is something to be stopped.

He called Scotland a one party state. Honest to God, if we have heard that once we have heard it a million times in the last few weeks.

The arrogance of a party of elite money grabbing Tories knows no bounds. Calling the only country in the UK where there is an ACTUAL coalition a “one party state”
is laughable and, of course a lie. Despite this it is sadly parroted with depressing regularity.

We have also seen language which talks of the SNP “seizing power” as if there hadn’t been elections which the SNP won – again and again and again.

David Frost calls the Scottish Government a “local administration” and calls for devolved powers to be rolled back so that our politicians can be put back into our box.

And not just our politicians folks – us, the people of Scotland. Our ambitions, our hopes, our democratic right to choose for ourselves what happens in Scotland is at risk. That risk is probably greater just now, than at any time since 1997.
The Tories are possibly in their death throes. They are polling badly and their policies on asylum seekers and refugees, and this attack on devolution is designed to shore up their appeal to their right wing voters.

Make no mistake, the Tories would feed us to the lions if they thought it would keep them in power. There are some who think that’s what’s happening already. I’m avoiding the conspiracy theories but to think there is not an opportunistic attempt by the Tories to get rid of, or at the very least neuter us “rebellious scots” and our parliament would be naive.

I said a couple of days ago that things are better in Scotland and we should not forget that. It is that which riles the Tories. And not just them, Labour, the media all hate to share news which shows that things are better here. That’s why we have soooo many stories predicting doom and gloom. This week three of Scotlands hospitals were in the worlds best hospitals list. Everyone know that? I thought not. George Foulkes once complained that the SNP were making things better in Scotland and they “are doing it deliberately”.

Bloody right they are.

Thank goodness for that. But make no mistake, if the UK government can clip out wings, they will.

Brexit was designed to “take back control” and that included of Scotland and Wales. This Government is determined to stick us with their shitty Brexit deal and the destruction it causes. The Section 35 order overriding democratically passed legislation has been triggered. The Foreign Office has also instructed their staff to monitor Scottish ministers and parliamentarians on foreign visits and indeed told the SG they have no right to make visits abroad. They’d be confiscating passports if they thought they’d get away with it.

Labour aren’t much better. Keir Starmer owned up recently to sacking Richard Leonard, the previous leader in Scotland. Of course he did. Scottish Labour, the Scottish conservatives aren’t stand alone parties. They are the voice of WM in Scotland.

Until they are not, devolution is at risk. Power devolved is power retained. Our devolved Parliament has no permanency if it can be reduced, diminished or removed by the UK Government. The risk of that is greater now that it has ever been.

Independence is the only way to ensure that we can continue to deliberately make things better in Scotland. The Independence campaign is crucial. We must continue to increase support and work towards the opportunity to build a better nation that only independence can bring us.
