Haven’t we been here before?
So … Brexit …
Something is happening!
Honda is shutting its plant in Swindon. Voters were warned that this would happen if we were leaving the EU. And it has.
But that’s not all!
Is it a new cross party agreement shaped by Labour and the Tories together in the spirit of compromise and joint working? Nope
Is it a plan for a second referendum – a people’s vote? Nope
Is it throwing the whole thing out and starting from scratch? Nope
Theresa May is bringing her bloody Withdrawal Agreement back to Westminster AGAIN for a vote!
I kid you not folks. All this time, all this talking, all this waiting around for something to happen and in the end we are right back where we started – TM’s withdrawal bill.
The reason why it is coming back on 3rd of June is because that’s the last chance to vote on it so we leave before the newly elected MEPs take up theirs seats.
Word is that TM expects such a doing at the EU elections that she is hoping it will scare the MPs into voting for her deal. That’s SUCH a positive and hopeful way to take such a massive step. NOT!
Labour are apparently refusing to believe the Tories will hold to their agreement if they have a new leader, but Olly Robbins (Brexit Negotiator apparently) went to Brussels yesterday to see what changes could be made to the “Future Agreement”. Not that this looks likely to make much difference, the word on the street is that the Lab Tory talks will collapse on Thursday – I’m surprised they’ve lasted this long.
So – what else is happening – well there are squabbles all over! Vince Cable -who incidentally sold off Royal Mail when in coalition and now has a seat on the Royal Mail board – has criticised the Green Party for rejecting their approaches on working together, The Green Party say the Lib Dem’s never approached them and it’s all lies. The Tories and Labour are arguing amongst themselves. No vote has taken place in Westminster since April 10th.
Meanwhile in Scotland we are not immune to the squabbling. The SNP are disagreeing over Gender politics, Pete Wishart’s Speakers bid and internal complaints procedures, Scottish Labour are falling out over Brexit, bullying, racism and …. internal complaints procedures.
Leaflets are coming thick and fast. The SNPs not always with the right name on them. Pity the poor sod that sorted the excel spreadsheet and didn’t apply his sort to the whole sheet rather than just one column. Scottish Labour leaflets are going out in Welsh to highlanders. Pity the poor sod who thought it was Gaelic. The Tories leaflet on the EU election doesn’t mention Brexit once.
None of this is surprising! Everyone is at the end of their tether.
Fortunately in the midst of all this the SG has been getting on with the day job.
Scotland’s new Social Security Agency are set to deliver seven more benefits by the end of this year. Consultation is open on the Disability Assistance replacement for PIP and the latest measurements show a high level of satisfaction for those using it.
Scotland is generating the most tidal energy in the world. Despite Westminster cutting funding for renewables the SG is supporting research and innovation and its paying off
The Brexit Party with Farage at its helm is leading the opinion polls elsewhere in the UK. That doesn’t need to be Scotland’s fate we are already doing better and doing more. An Independent Scotland could soar.
