So a little bit of headline busting here just to amuse myself.
Today we hear that the WM is going to spend £4million compensating soldiers who are living in Scotland and earning more than £26000 pa because they will be paying more tax than soldiers posted in England.
But let’s have a closer look at this bit of news.
Firstly, it’s a bit bizarre that the Tory Party, who gave Scotland the power to vary its tax rates are raging because Scotland has… erm…. varied it’s…tax rates?
Next, let’s look at the sums involved. The Picture below shows the changes and the comparisons between Scotland and the rest of the U.K. from a tax point of view.
For those people earning up to £33000 there will have been no increase in their tax from last year. However if you are lucky enough to earn £33000 you will be paying £70 more than you would be in England. A year.
And what do you get for that £70? Well let’s see, you get free prescriptions, you get free nursery care, you get free tuition for your student children. You also get the best performing NHS in the U.K. you get cheaper houses, cheaper Council tax too.
So how many serving forces personnel are there in Scotland? Well, the best information from the armed forces themselves tells us that they have 10000 regulars and 4000 reserves. The conservatives tell us that 70% of these personnel need compensating for paying more tax.
So…. 70000 regulars must earn more than 26000 per year. That’s a corporals salary. Are 70% of the soldiers stationed here corporals or above? I’d be amazed if that’s true. Because if WM are spending £4 million they are paying 10000 personnel £400 each. You have got to be kidding me. To be paying £400 more in Scotland you have to be earning £100,000 pa.
But hey, they can pay our boys more if they like, well, the better off ones that is. I have no issue with that. A Scottish weighting is neither here nor there. But let’s get it in perspective.
The WM Government might be having to fork out £4million to support well paid people. The Scottish Government has had to spend £400 million to make up for the appalling policies of WM which target the poorest making them worse off, causing REAL hardship, poverty and destitution. It’s not very edifying to see Tories gleefully cheering on the fact that they are saving the “brave men and women serving in our armed forces” from having to pay a few quid a week more whilst the brave men and women living with illness and disability are losing their motability cars, disability living allowance, ESA, independence, peace of mind and sometimes, sadly, risking their actual fucking lives. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/disability-welfare-cuts-driving-people-11437406
